Had a few thoughts after my first 700 miles on my '22 PAS.

Quick bit of background.. I've been riding a 05 carburetor-ed sportster 1200 for the past 7 years, put about 40k on it. I'd even done some light touring on it. After trying to make it a touring bike and realizing that will never really work, I got my PAS. (Still have it too). So thats where my head is at moving to the PAS.

So far, no major issues with the bike (knock on wood) aside from today I got the first blank screen on startup. I have the latest firmware and been keeping it on a tender all the time. (i always do with all my bikes.. nothing new there). The blank screen went away after a few startups, but i wonder if it was due to there being about 10 'glides in close proximity to it (they were also starting up thier bikes.. i'm usually alone starting mine..). Lots of fobs nearby? Just a guess.

Anyway, the PAS has power for days and i'm loving how I can go on the highway and not white knuckle it. I find the windscreen useful and im still not used to 6 gears! Downshifting at high speeds has been a little odd, but i think im just getting the feel for the clutch.

I have my android phone paired to the bike and my cardo freecom 4+ paired to it as well. I have no issues with this set up, I'm streaming music from my phone no problems. Though it sometimes cuts in and out, but not enough to be a problem. The map is garbage though. I dont understand the app and the map itself looks like a topo map from the 40's. HD really bunged this up. I hope a future update fixes it or a module for carplay comes out at some point.

The lights are as bad as i've heard. I did a dusk ride tonight (short one) and i felt invisible on the road. On my Sporty i have custom dynamics LED's all around and even with an old bike like that, between the loud exhaust and CD lights.. i'm definitely noticed. I have some Denali's on the way for my PAS.. just the lights on the hand gaurd and rear license plate. I will probably get one of those big spotlights the Denali offers when funds allow.

Also, speaking of that.. I have a Screaming Eagle slip on exhaust on the way. I dont mind how quiet it is but I've noticed how cars dont hear me coming compared to my sportster.. esp on highways. Need some grunt.

Aside from those two planned upgrades, i've only done the A1 risers and the HD Folding Shift Lever. I knew i'd do these on day one because my wrists go numb on the stock ones and my big a** feet can never find the stock shift lever. Happy with both though i have to say, my right hand still goes a little numb w/ the A1 risers. Oh and the sport side cases, which i've already managed to dent slightly backing them out in my driveway (backed into a trash bin... like, not hard at all)

Speaking of parts, a negative to me is the lack of aftermarket stuff. I did my research but I'm still kinda floored how some of these bigger aftermarket parts companies that cater to the HD crowd have little to nothing for the PA. I wrote to a few of them to see.. and for instance Ciro 3d was like, "yea, we're never making pan am parts". Really?! Weaksauce in my opinion.

After the exhaust and lights, all that i want are highway pegs and a passenger backrest. Maybe i'm just used to them on my other bikes.. but so far i'm not wow'd by the options.

Which leads me to my only real negative on the bike, is the seat. For the record, i'm 6' with a 34" inseam and i have the seat in the "low" position. Im tiptoed at stops, which doesnt bother me. Back to the stock seat.. I loved it on the test rides, and i love it around town. But after longer rides, thats no longer the case. After an hour the top half of my butt is numb. And my tailbone is killing me. This NEVER happens to me on my sportster which by all accounts is way more uncomfortable (though i like my mustang seat.. basic but good). I'm thinking it has to do with the low setting on the stock seat slopes downward towards the tank some. I saw a video were a guy was cliping the plastic pilions on the seat to make it sit more even. I'm skeptical to cut plastic to try this. I think I'm going to try it in the high setting to see if that is more comfortable, but reach may be a problem for me. I'm also considering sending it to the place that shapes the seat for you (mean city cycles), or trying the low seat (do HD dealers let you test ride PA seats?). Of course theres other aftermarket seats, but before anyone says Saddlemen, i hate the way those look.

But aside from the seat, most of this is just nitpicking. So far i'm loving the bike and excited to get some more miles under my belt. Anyway, let me know your comments if you have any (esp about the seat)!

It seems that many folks who take the time to write-up short, medium, or long range reviews, do so with detail. As with any vehicle, we all use them differently, and of course have different opinions on 10,000 items associated with it.
These types of write-ups are what makes a forum like this so useful to people. Good, bad, indifferent observations are all good. I seem to really gravitate to those that provide a timeline of a trip that includes stops. These stories inspire people to look in to areas they may have never considered, look for gear to make things better, or just find that 'next great burger joint'.
Its why we are all here. we are all 'enthusiasts'. All of different types and interests, but it is the motorcycle we all have in common. I hope to see more write-ups like this and of course hope to contribute some of my own. I'm no English major, but my daughter is. Perhaps I'll enlist her services to make sure my grammar reflects my intent. In the meantime, I'll be out trying to take notes for my next write up. I hope many more do the same.

Thanks for that. I am familiar with some of the aftermarket brands.. but i guess im surprised its not the normal HD aftermarket brands.

Also, a few things i forgot to mention after i took my sportster out today.

I love that i can find neutral super easy on the PA.

The heat the PA throws off is certianly a bummer. But given that im in the northeast, its usually cold so maybe that'll be a plus soon?

Oh and today i noticed that my coolant dipstick was dry. I bought some of the genuine HD stuff, put in 4oz at a time. The first 4oz barley made a difference, the second 4oz overflowed everywhere. Very touchy! I had to turkey baster it out to get it, but are there tricks to reading that dipstick? very hard to interpret.

A word of caution
Knoby tires have a lower speed / load limitation.
Or this may happen to you

You shoud take a reading when the engine is cold, wipe it down and repeat.
It should read at the max line.

I have a PAS that use for commuting. Great bike. I put the Altrider highway pegs on. Expensive for what they are in my opinion as they lack an axis of adjustment, but was able to make them work to be comfy on a 5 hour tour.

Not that my opinion matter, but keep that Sporty. No matter how great and "controlled" the new stuff is (and safe for that matter), there will never be a replacement for the rawness that is the Sporty. If you never rode one, you have no idea. I was chatting with a BMW rep. They were trying to replicate the "raw factor" of the Harley to try to keep up with Harley sales, in Germany!

Ride on! Every ride is awesome! Bad bikes are better than no bikes!

I've seen a few "designed for the PAS" highway pegs and they are all crazy expensive. I may just get standard HD highway pegs w/ engine gaurd mounts and put spacers in. Like these ones from J&P J&P Cycles Rubber Footpeg Set With Clamp-On Mount | JPCycles.com

Vance and Hines slip on is a LOT louder than the Screaming Eagle (which isn't much louder than stock) without being obnoxious except on a cold start.
Yea, this is why i went with the SE. From what i've gathered, the SE is just as quiet as stock at stop and more noticable at speed. And if you take the db killer out, then it really opens up. I like that option.. Putting it on this week.

Okay, i'm at 1700mi (well 1900 now). Just did a 900 mile 3 day trip, first one on the PA. Holiday weekend in the northeast, rode the berkshires, adirondacks, green and white mtns. I only saw two PA's. A few thoughts doing long riding days (well not that long, 250ish a day).
No issues with the bike aside from a few blank screen startups. Almost dropped it twice, once at a roadside river stop and it was very loose gravel. And another heading up to the summit of Whiteface Mtn. There was a 25 car backup waiting to park and it was at an extreme grade. I still can't get hill hold to work, so i tried to u turn.. that was all of my strength to keep that thing upright. Can't recommend that road at all. I really do need to fix the seat (or replace) as well as some highway pegs, but i found if i stopped for a sanity stop every hour or two, i was fine. I just had my sport side cases and i really wished i had a top case for those extra bottles of water or gatorade at gas stations. I packed way too much cold weather gear, by the last day it was 95 without any clouds. Just brutally hot. Speaking of that. I checked the tire pressure before i left and the rear was at 42psi per HD spec. As it got hot, my tpms gauge read almost 50. At one point i let 2psi out just in case but i'm not sure if it should get that high. I know other HD's have a high/low pressure warning. Does that PA?
Anyway, only one person stopped to chat with me about the PA. Aside from that, most of the riders ignored me. Most were canadian riders on street/road glides.

Lastly, i recommend crossing from NY to VT on a ferry.

Check it out "Tip of the day for new and old Panam owners."
Hot weather, loaded bike, road trips, tire temps, etc...
It may help.

I think that I am going to have a custom gel insert done to the stock seat by a local mc upholsterer. The stock seat is not bad but everything can be improved upon. Glad you are liking the Pan Am. I absolutely love the adaptive suspension and its lowering at stops. I don't need it but I sure appreciate it as a older guy.

Yea, mean city cycles provides that service and has great reviews. I'm just waiting to pull the trigger on it.

My dad was a motorbike instructor and we also rode dirtbikes all over the back country for decades. When doing a U-turn on a hill, he taught me this: ride to the edge of the other side/edge of the road (picture crossing over and the ditch is by your left foot), then you back up while turning the bars right to create a semi-circle and you will be flush with the road (facing the ditch your left foot was just next), and then you turn left to complete your left turn and U-turn. Doing it this way is quickest and safest, enabling you to keep the weight of the bike leaning into the hill. He said he was also taught this by a cop to do a quick turn around on a narrow road.

Love this thread. @Sq51lacfd is right on point. The write-ups are helpful. In this case, I read from the top and before I knew it, you went from 700 miles to 1900 miles in one thread and one sitting for me! Fantastic. I love how unique the riders are and this bike. Don't think I've heard a person say of everything experienced, it's the SEAT that is your issue. I am glad to read that taking a break every hour or so relieves the sore-ass-getting-numb scenario. I am finally comfortable to really get out there and ride but it took me months to figure out the lighting scenarios I wanted and the horn scenario I wanted and the communication system I wanted. Now I've got them (denali with CanSmart controller, dual track motohorn, Sena 30 synched to my phone through the PAS AND synced to my tablet sitting in my map pouch on top of my Mosko Nomax tank bag). I was holding back until now. I do have on the Black Dog foot pegs. My size 14/15 CE2 Boots (TCX mainly) need a big ass peg and I'm GLAD to see you found a shifter solution. I need one of those cuz my toe barely fits under it. (So thank you). Onward and thanks to the admins on this thread and on the site.

@71Romeo you bring up a great point. I didnt point out the upgrades and how they worked out for me. After this long trip I absolutely love the feel and sound from the SE exhaust with the DB killer removed. It just feels so much better. The shifter peg I dont even notice anymore. I may have to find something similar for the rear brake, i felt my foot sliding off at times. Again, big a** feet problems. One thing i didnt point out is that my left ankle/foot would get fatigued after a while due to the position it was in.. pointing down-ish. Highway pegs are high on my list of next upgrades. I used the cruise control on the highways and while im' still not super comfortable with it, it was nice to get my right hand some relief. I'm still somewhat leaning my weight on the bars despite the A1 risers. I'm taking my bike to the dealer at some point to ask why my hill hold assist isnt working. Its probably user error, but i'm also thinking they may not know either. They were not super knowledgable of the PA (which didnt bother me, i did alot of test rides and research prior to buying).

Also, this was my first multi-day solo trip and i did learn alot about how to do it. Things that aren't bike specific. I'm leaving that out on this thread since i'm trying to keep it relevant.. but my biggest worry was leaving the bike outside a motel at night. I chose safe areas so I wasnt an issue, plus i just bought in the sport luggage with me. And I used a cover. Probably not needed, but i still did it.
