Just got back out of the woods late yesterday after 12 days out in the middle of nowhere hunting. I ended up putting over 1100km on dirt roads, slept in a large tent by myself, endured daily rain/wind storms, but loved every second of the camp. I was with my friend and his 3 year old daughter, his very pregnant wife joined us for about a week in the middle, and the rest of the time I was out and about mostly on my own; that is when the mind wanders and the solitude therapy begins; cell phones don't work here for 100's of kilometres. I often tell people in regards to both "why do I ride and why do I hunt?", is that sometimes you find yourself in the middle of nowhere and sometimes, in the middle of nowhere, you find yourself.

The moose weren't just wandering around just yet, it was early season and the rut is just begining, so we had to rely on calling to get those guys to come out and get some. The biggest one my buddy called right out to within 15 yards and when that guy stuck his head out of the heavy woods, looked left at his wife and daughter, my friend popped him right behind the ear and dropped that guy right there. At the same time, I was 1km down the road and had another bull coming towards my call but once my friend's gun shot went off, my guy turned around and high tailed it back into the bush.

Due to the weather still being above freezing, we needed to take this big guy into town and a butcher the next day, so we were up until 1am quartering this moose and getting it ready to hang. You pay by the pound at the butcher based on hung weight, so we cut out most of the backbone we could prior and it still weighed in at 735lbs! Butcher said biggest one he has seen in a long time for this area.

Anyways, my moose calls must be off a bit because other than a few bulls I got talking back to me and the one that almost came out of the woods, all my calls seemed to attract were more black bears; I had three of them come out and dancing towards me when I was giving off my cow calls. My wife and sons like bear meat, so I decided to bring this guy home into the freezer. Bears look big - but you don't get a lot of meat out of them once skinned out. I was aiming for a head shot on this guy as he was only 140 yards from me when I had enough of him coming towards me, but he moved slightly at the last moment and I got him through the leg and neck, cutting both arteries and he dropped within 25 yards.

Here is my 3 year old hunting partner - she was a hoot, right into the outdoors. We had to go looking for my phone that I lost the day before when I was 60km away from camp exploring. I used a cheap $25 bluetooth speaker that would auto connect to help me find my phone - new tech mixed with beat feet to get the hardware back home.

Just a few extra pics from the camp. After 12 days, you want to get back and see the family. But as soon as my tires hit cement again, I want to turn around and head right back into the woods. Now back to reality.

Awesome!
Thats such beautiful country up there. Reminds me of the Adirondacks living in Plattsburgh NY as a kid and riding my little ATC out to Lyon Mountain along the old D&H rail bed. Nice to see the kid out there enjoying nature and great experiences.
Good stuff!
One day I’m gonna learn to hunt…
