Wondering if someone with the Sport Side Cases could measure the nominal dimensions (HxWxD)? I'm pretty sure the Sport Cases are manufactured by Shad out of Spain as the mounting system (3P System) is the same. Also, the country of origin is Spain for individual parts of the sport cases ordered through HD. I'm curious if the Shad Cases will fit directly onto the PA, as there are some different size options. I can't seem to find the dimensions for the HD PA Sport Cases anywhere online. I would also like to get my hands on the 3P mounting system parts (case side) to attempt to mount directly to a pelican case. Anyone with a broke/damaged side case willing to disassemble mounts from the bag to evaluate the feasibility of repurposing the the mounts onto other cases? I like the design and look of the Sport Side Cases, but I need cases that enable lane splitting in the city environment. I wish the Sport Cases where half the depth or less than they are; I would really like some slim hard cases that kept overall width to around 32".

It's not the TourTec..... I got this Chinese one that was cheap but does the job better than the OEM upper rack. I got it after watching one of the Matt Laidlaw videos and watched one of his guys break the OEM upper rack trying to put the bike on the center stand. Pazoma is where I found my rack. I have handlebar risers on there that go up 3" and back 2" too. It is true that IF you use a rack like this, it locks the bags in there. Doesn't really bother me because I never take them off. Also, in my first reply, I forgot to mention that the right saddle bag, has a little less volume inside because of where the exhaust pipe is located. You'll get that with every series of saddle bags.

@christopher.lawrence thanks for the quick response with the dimensions.

The Side Case attachment parts I'm interested in are #13 and # 14 in the attached parts breakdown. I looked into ordering them, but it would cost more than $500 just for those parts. Too much, for an experiment. In the parts breakdown it does not show any hardware, so I was wondering if they can be disassembled, or if the bags are put together with adhesive. I would like to take the attachment parts (#13 and #14) and retrofit them to a slim Pelican Case. I would need to get a shorter aftermarket muffler for sure. I also suspect the Shad Case attachment hooks/mechanism (round attachment shape) are nearly identical to the Harley Sport Case (square attachment shape), and am looking to find a Shad Case to measure the hooks to see if it will attach directly to the PA stock Side Case bracket with minimal shaping (round to square). I suspect the Shad Cases will mount directly to the PA with minimal modification. Finding some used Shad Cases for disassembly would be a lot cheaper than Harley Cases, so it will be great if they are cross compatible. The SH23 may work perfect on it's own, but may still be a bit wider than I would like. Here is a link to a video that shows the Shad Case 3P hooks in better detail.

how are you all "wrapping" your sport cases to get rid of the grey? i'm seeing more and more doing this.. Sorry to de-rail the topic but i'm interested to know.

PS my left side sport bag has been at the dealer for over a month waiting on part #13.. ugh. At least its cold here and i'm not doing any long trips.

I did a wrap right after I got mine. Ordered the stuff from Amazon after watching some YouTube videos. I didn't like the way it looked with the aluminum panels because it didn't really mesh well with everything being kind of tactical colors. Then didn't like the way the wrap came out so I sanded, primed, and painted it myself. I'll probably redo the paint. If you saw it in person, and I pointed it out to you, you'd see it's a couple of shades off of the Harley mineral green color the Enthusiast Edition comes in. I found a place online that sells the exact color, or so they claim.

One of the reasons the locks on the cases are “one-off” might be so they are compatible with the other locks such as the locking fuel cap? I just added the locking fuel cap to my ’23 PAs and I went through the absolute “fun” of loading the springs and key stop tabs into the lock cylinder. I was very happy I had previous experience with these locks from when I mounted my H-D cases. I can say the second time when mounting the fuel cap was much easier than the first. :)

do any of the shad cases mount to the pan am mounts (the ones that come on the bike)?
I went down this "rabbit hole" a few weeks ago! Assuming you are talking about the cut-outs in the back carrier plate that only the sport case uses...

While I have not seen ALL of the shad cases, there was a set at a Honda shop- an "SH36" that looked so close that I asked the shop if I could go out and try it. It was so close, yet sooo far. By that I mean, it was the same mechanism and style but the measurements were off by maybe 5mm. So easy answer is no..

As a matter of fact, Shad does sell a set for the PA.. The "4P system" that mounts on a set of racks like a pannier! (ridiculous).. The whole reason I have the sport cases is the "easy-on" and "easy-off" with NO HARDWARE design.

Yea, i figured as much. My sport bags are working fine but the tumbler keeps coming out when i remove the key. Its super annoying. The whole lock system on those bags is absolute trash.
Go back to your instructions... You have plate installed incorrectly, or not at all.. The very first one installed is a retainer. It'll have a slightly higher shear line. Hopefully you still have the install kit and directions. If not, a skilled locksmith might be able to help.

HD tried to get fancy and let people (and dealerships) key their own. This created the problem, keying a tumbler core requires precision and patience..

[QUOTE= requires precision and patience..

Tobba611 is correct, loads of patience. My 1st one took 30 minutes (sport panniers left side), 2nd one 5 minutes (right side). 3rd one, 2 minutes Locking fuel cap). All are working well, so far.

I did not realize you do not need the key to open the side cases if the cases are unlocked. (Tabs down, tumbler in unlocked position.)You only need to push down on the lock and the tab will pop up. I always thought I needed the key. I discovered that the key is needed only if the case has been locked via the key (tumbler in the locked position).

they're all there.. its the first one on the one side right? (#21?)

Yep! Thats the retainer.. But there's a bit more to it than the instructions let on. The retainer tumbler, or plate is the only tumbler that will stick up above the "shear line" when the key is inserted. Once the cylinder(4) is inserted, it gets arrested in the lock. The only way to pull the cylinder out is supposed to be to insert the key, rotate to a certain position and then use a specialized implement to hook the cylinder and pull. (I've used a hooked pick). There could be several things happening in your case:

  • One of the standard position tumblers is incorrect causing pressure on the key, making it harder to remove and thus allowing it to be able to overcome the spring on the retention tumbler.
  • Retention tumbler is incorrect and level with the cylinder. Never gets arrested.
  • Dirt/debris/manufacturing flash in the retention tumbler path in the mechanism, not allowing the tumbler to seat. (No arrest).
  • Something in the bottom of the cylinder hole, not letting it seat. (No arrest)
  • Wrong o-ring. Not allowing the cylinder to drop into the hole all the way. (no arrest)
  • retention tumbler not springing up.

In situations like this I usually start by taking the cylinder completely apart and starting over. I will lightly sand each tumbler with 1000-2000 grit sandpaper and polish them with a cotton wheel on a dremel and some rubbing compound. Once I put them all back together. I'll lube them with some light oil or "Superlube" grease. Don't use a thick grease, it'll keep the tumblers from working correctly. You almost have to treat these things like you are working on a pocket watch or an old clock.

There are a bunch of cases that have this exact problem.. The new gen KLR650 "traveler edition" came with cases the dealer has to key. I've heard of several of those having no lock, cylinder came out and locked to the bike problems. I've had to deal with two of those myself. Honda has the same problems with the ST1300 locking systems on the bags and the dash storage compartments. I just remove the tumblers from those, leaving the retention tumbler.. That way, anything key-shaped will open the bag. (Hint)

It's hard to say this without sounding like a prick with a superiority complex but Harley (Or maybe Shad in this situation) should never allow an end user to key their own locks. It's asking for trouble. Having a set of nearly 1000 dollar bags (that are actually really nice) be ruined by a picky locking mechanism is dumb. I mean, it's nice having one key and all but you don't see companies like SW Motech pulling that crap, you just get a key with your bags that has already been tested and works.
