Unfortunately staying in Kenya I don't have easy access to parts so even though my fuel filter was not that bad I just cleaned it with a carb cleaner and reinstalled it. Also even though I have a QFSI pump I have kept it on stand by and am using the stock pump and have done 10k kms on it in the past 3 months without the screeching sound after cleaning the pressure valve.
This QFS pump for the Pan Am has a strainer ... kinda hard to find on their website, this was from email conversations with them:

The Pump from QFSI fits but the strainer does not. You have to use the stock strainer from Harley which fits perfectly on the QFSI pump. After about 2k kms on the QFSI pump I started getting the screeching sound again which made me rule out the problem being the pump itself and do I did a systematic dissection and found out the problem was the pressure valve.

Operation Fuel Pump: The whining noise from the fuel pump has been a long known issue, I changed to QFSI after market pump and yet the noise persisted. So today I decided to go to the root cause of the problem and dissected the fuel pump. My findings is that the issue is in the small pressure valve attached to the pump. Once cleaned the fuel pump is now very quiete and the whining during riding has totally stopped.
Thanks for such a useful and important information. Someone from HD should learn about this.

For screeching noise, HD usually just change the fuel pump. This is costly especially for those whose bike is already out of warranty.

My pressure wasn't rusted. I also connected with a couple of people that installed the Quantum and it fixed the grinding and humming. HD replaces the entire module, not just the fuel pump. They use Bosch pumps for OEM. Here's a video of what I did.... so far so good!

I have been having issues with my 2023 Pan American special at about 9500 km. I am loosing power like it is starving for gas. Like a dirty fuel filter. I'm on the road going across the USA. Crusing at 110 km with cruse control on all of a sudden the bike is starving for gas. Can barely make it up the hills in 3rd gear.
Harley warranty isn't worth anything. It pays 3 days but can take a week to get your bike in to have a look at.

The filter is about $40, could change it yourself and see if that helps? It is not on their radar to be honest as a preventative maintenance item.....

Well I made my way to Vandervest Harley Davidson in Green Bay Wisconsin.
It was the fuel pump assembly that was the problem.
Covered by warranty.
I had Vandervest Harley Davidson replace the rear tire.
The next day I rode to Lebanon Kansas approximately 800 miles. Which was my next stop.
I was leaving Lebanon I noticed that the bike was making a noise.
I could see filling along the swing arm and chain guard the chain was loose.
I decided to end my ride and head to Mountain View Harley Davidson to repair my bike. I made it to Pocatello Idaho and the chain fell off.
Towed the bike to Mountain view. Swing arm sprockets and chain were all damaged costing me approximately $4500 CND. I have been in contact with Vandervest Harley Davidson I never had a problem till they replaced the rear tire.

That is one worn out countershaft sprocket and the chain looks very dry.
I'm more concerned with all of the aluminum flakes from the swingarm lol. You can see there in the front where it wasn't even riding on the chain guide. Yep, sprocket looks really worn, chain is dry and has the red rust dust on it, definitely past time to replace it. I have all the kit to replace all mine myself (except for that damn chain guide lol), waiting on the rear sprocket bolts to get here this week. Not H-D ones either, titanium and ready for safety wire :). Highly recommend sprocketcity.com

I was trying to be tactful. I’m hoping the aftermarket kicks it a notch or two with good quality stuff soon!

I've had to replace the swing ar
m sprockets and chain. That's not rust it Lucus chain spray. All because Vandervest Harley Davidson in Green Bay Wisconsin didn't properly adjust the chain after installing a new rear tire.
I'm sorry you had to deal with this ... call the MoCo and raise hell. Hopefully that dealer will take some responsibility? The dealer that fixed it, they had all those parts in stock (swingarm, chain and both sprockets, front sprocket nut and rear sprocket bolts? The all elusive mythical chain guide as well?

That red dust on top of your chain and on the outside plastic chain protective cover is indeed rust dust ... I have the same thing happening with mine at almost 19K miles. Orings have failed and the inside of the pins are rusting.

Good luck, and I hope you get some money back!

I tried this today while waiting for a warranty pump. There was rust on this pressure valve which I sanded off. There was also rust on the spring for the valve. When the tank was near empty there was no whine after performing this maintenance and I thought all was good….i filled the tank and noise is definitely still there. Whatever, I had to take the tank off anyway for my 5000 service. I’ll let Harley do the warranty work when the part comes in. I was hoping to fix it because I have a 2000 mile ride thru Nova Scotia coming up and I’d rather not do it with a screechy fuel pump.

I put a Quantum fuel pump on a Yamaha. It had plenty of pressure but didn’t have enough volume. I’ll never buy another one. It was a PITA to change it twice
I bought a complete fuel pump for my HD XR1200. Turns out the pressure regulator was bleeding down, fuel pump was not putting out enough pressure and the quick disconnect leaked fuel. Real Chinese junk!!!!

Hi Jesse, can you please let me know where do you get these alternative sprocket bolts?
Thanks
Manfred

Apologies Manfred, just now seeing this. It was an Amazon company and they sent me the wrong bolts, NOT drilled for safety wire, and the bolt head flange was too small. Nothing like what the photos/description said. Then they refused to answer emails, so they were a loss for me.

I bought some other bolts from Amazon, grade 10.9, zinc coated, they worked just fine. $5.99 for 10 pcs.
