Hey everyone,

I am looking into getting a Pan America 1250 and would love some honest feedback from current owners. I am especially curious about how it’s held up over time. How are the engine and electronics handling long rides and different terrains: ?? Any recurring issues or maintenance surprises I should be aware of: ?? I have read that the adaptive ride height is a game changer but I am wondering if there have been any issues with it.

Also, how are you finding the support from dealerships: ?? Has it been smooth when it comes to parts or repairs: ??

Appreciate any insight from those who have put some real miles on theirs especially if you have taken it on long trips. I am planning to ride a mix of on and off road so I am trying to get a realistic idea of what to expect in terms of reliability and durability. I have also searched on the forum for any tips and advice related to my query and I found this https://www.panamericaforums.com/threads/harley-davidson-pan-america-vs-bmw-r-react-native-1250-gs.9/ but couldn't get any help.

Thanks in advance for your help !!

Most of this has been covered on other threads. But here's a direct response.

I have a 2021, I am currently at 36,000 (ish) miles. I ride nearly every day and commute about 80 miles round trip daily. I ride 70% on road, 30% off road. My PA has been on several really long trips. I bought the extended warranty for my bike and have used it once. I do all services myself. I'm on my third set of spark plugs, either 4th or 5th set of tires, (cant remember, I would need to reference my book), third set of chain and sprockets (second set was fine- didn't need to change, I was going on a trip and didn't want to be doing it on the road).

Issues I've had:

Year one
1. When I first got the bike, it would issue some weird codes and sometimes wouldn't start if I let it sit.. Weird part was it would crank over but was under 12volt so it wouldn't start. ALL of the codes it issued were about some module losing communication or not responding. ALL of the "code" and starting issues were resolved by installing an after-market battery with a higher mAh and CCA. two years later, I haven't had a single erroneous code. The only time my bike is ever on a charger is when I am doing an infotainment update. (done twice).
2. Key fob battery died. The bike acted weird while this was happening, it would power up and then turn back off or just do nothing when I turned the power on. The fob became obvious when I switched the bike on without mounting it first. (If you jump on it without the fob, security gets triggered).

Year two
1. Ignition coil died. Mine is the only ignition coil failure I've heard or read about. Replaced in less than an hour by HD. I don't know if they just happened to have one, or if they pulled one from a bike on the floor.
2. A little wrench popped up on the screen. The wrench is a time-based indicator for brake flush. My dealer reset it without flushing at my request. I flushed it myself later. Took maybe 10 minutes while I was shopping 50 dollar shirts.

Year Three

Stator failure. Replaced by HD. Took two days. No one said a word about my Lithium battery.

Negative comments:

1. I've never liked the way the engine sounds. It sounds just like ever other PA I've been around and it sounds better than a KTM, IMHO.. Doesn't mean I have to like it.
2. Some HD service departments are piss-poor. They either don't know jack about the PA, are intimidated by it, or only want to work on "real Harleys". Some shops also have a weird culture of people that hang out there. In America, you really have to shop around for a good dealer/service center. Luckily, there are more good than bad. There are also a lot of them. BUT, if you want a smug culture and self-righteous techs, you could just buy a BMW.
3. It's a little heavy for tight, muddy, areas.
4. Mine still occasionally does the "starter whine", that was fixed on the 22's. (There is a fix for mine, I just haven't made time to get it done). I don't really care.
5. I've been riding around with a new fuel pump under the seat because the forums have lead me to believe they all fail, without question. Mine is still the original pump.
6. The requirement for 93 octane. Not a lot of people in my area use 93 octane. Some gas stations in rural Tennessee don't even have it. So I think it is sometimes old or watery. Which lead to my final negative comment, the bike like clean, pure fuel. It will sometimes surge when I fill up at questionable gas stations. If I add an octane booster or injector cleaner, it soothes right out.
7. The anti-Harley people. If you are looking for negative comments, you won't have far to look. There is a plethora of people that exist to be negative towards HD. Nearly every TicTok video with a Harley, nearly every Youtube video and it appears that people even sign up to forums just to crap on the brand or the bike and then never return. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen. It makes finding actual, useful info really hard. You just don't see this with other brands.

Positive Comments:

1. Extensive dealer network to choose from.
2. Excellent customer support from HD. (Hearsay, I haven't actually called them).
3. This is the most comfortable and well fitting bike I have ever owned, (and I've owned a lot). I'm 6'5", about 265 and this bike fits me perfect with nothing bought or modifications needed.
4. Good cruiser, excellent sport bike.
5. Rides the same, loaded or unloaded. Extremely versatile.
6. Great for two up.
7. I have always owned multiple bikes: a cruiser, and enduro, and a sport bike. The PA can be all three very well.
8. It's damn fast and nimble. Love the power and speed.

Im not gonna say/repeat/or type as much as tobba did as he laid it out very well. And I've stated many times on/in here bout my experiences.

ARH is awesome as id probably not be on an adv bike without it.

Had minor issues, heat sheat flying off, Arh acting up, fuel pump, and "o-ring" somehow allowed oil leak(fix improperly first time) so got my 10k service free, all warranty issues/fix.

Still have my oem battery, had, this year, several times off tinder for extended periods,(in transport mode), no issues, guess I'm the lucky one.

Buddy has a beemer that has had issues, especially the "limp" mode that I almost rear-ended him. Not slaming beemer, never owned one, but I know that from my experience riding with him.

In a nut shell, mine is a 21 and very happy with many smiles on it (~16k). Nothing but love for my PA, im sure those 16k turn into 60k, with some issues of course. Oh and I did get the best color option they've offered!😀

My quick .02 here. ✌

This has been discussed here, other boards and on FB very much. I think the consensus is any PA produced in late '22 or later is mostly free of issues. That isnt a guarantee (any vehicle can have problems) , but your chances of getting a bike with issues declines the more you go after MY 2022. My '22 has only had minor issues and im at 10k miles. But, I leave my bike on a tender 24/7. Haven't had the fuel pump issues yet, but i think thats a common one with the PA. If in the market and concerned, buy a new bike to get the 2 year warranty. Just my 2c. YMMV.

I have a late year '22 PAS. 27,000 miles, purchased in 01/23.

Replaced right hand control module (RHCM) due to code. Fuel pump replaced after whining. No failures to the point of keeping me from riding. Both RHCM and fuel pump were covered under warranty and turned about in 48 hours.

Great bike, so much fun! Buy it!!

Mr. Derek,
you are Smart my man to do as much research as possible before dropping 30K, or more by the time you are out da door, on an adventure motorcycle. I also joined this forum while doing my research specifically to hear from real, long time owners. I came away with two pieces of advice from all my responses that persuaded me to pull the trigger on a PAS.

First, score a 23 or later model because the electrical gremlins, starter and charging issues and the miscellaneous mechanical problems have been corrected, hopefully. Second check out the forums of other bikes you are considering. You will find that they all have their malfunction surprises, some even having the owners banging their head against the wall.

One observation in my research that was overwhelming was that reviewers on YouTube and posters on internet forums enthusiastically proclaim that they love to drive the Pan American. Many saying it is their favorite motorcycle they have ever driven. I rented the three bikes I was considering, something I would also recommend. For me, there was no question, I was immediately at one with the PAS. One can ride this bike all day long anywhere! I did not want to return it.

I have only owned my PAS CVO for a month. I have taken two 600 miles trips and drive it almost daily. So I am not a long time owner. But, I can tell you that this motorcycle is absolute stone grove to drive. The Adaptive Ride Height is smooth and fluent - it's like all of a sudden your standing flat footed when you stop. The Rev Tech motor screams on the straight aways and the bike handles the curves switchbacks effortlessly. This is coming from a guy who has been on an EVO with 14 inch ape hangers for 30 years.

Ok so this was kinda long winded. But, I am very excited about my purchase and wanted to share that with you.
Best of luck with your decision. Weather you go with the PAS or not post your decision to this thread.

I was lucky enough to have one of the first '21s that really didn't have any major issues, just the usual heatshield and few electronic gremlins. Loved it, but was a bit concerned about keeping it out of warranty. Sold it, but within 6 months I'm back on a '24. It is simply my favorite bike because it is so comfortable and versatile, yet so fast and fun to push around.

The list of positives is huge, the only bigger negatives I see are two - the charging system/undersized battery pre-2024, and for some is probably the resale value right now. The few smaller issues is how much of a PITA it is to remove the tank to get to the air filter (and two plugs) or to install wiring, the crappy built-in nav, and funky jiffy stand.

Dealer support is interesting. Within few hours I have a good number of HD locations. My closest one is simply not interested in anything PAS, but two others I've had no issues with.

I got a '22 PanAm Special.
Minor issues that could be fixed in my garage, but I had a remaining warranty, and they took care of it.
I let my warranty expire, and I'm fully confident in the reliability of my bike, after several 4 day trips, no issues, but again, I understand how the bike works.
Never took it to the dealer, except for the minor warranty stuff.
If I had the time, I'll be scheduling a trip from Florida to Alaska and back.
Love the PanAm, currently with 25k miles.

Yes the color is number one

I’ve got a 23 PAS with ARH 10k miles on it in the first 10 months. 1 software update and it hasn’t been back to the dealer since it was purchased. All the maintenance has been done by a very reputable shop in the Phoenix area or myself. I’ve only changed tires at 9k miles. Btw if you’re not going to Offroad it ( not including fire lanes and gravel roads) Michelin Road 6s are Fantastic on this bike!! They give me a lot of confidence ( probably a lot more than someone of my riding abilities should have)! Fire lanes, gravel roads aren’t a big deal just be aware (as you should be)

I have the 22-enthusiast edition (matte green with the white star on the side) and love it! I have had a couple issues with mine though. First was the day I drove it home from the dealer, the display screen (has all the gauges) went into an infinite boot loop where it would just keep restarting. I took it back the second time it happened and left it with the dealer. The dealer tech couldn't fix it but they had someone from the HD Corporate remote into his computer and flash the firmware. Only other thing I have had a problem with, I was on a ride with some friends, and the electronics freaked out and I had to shut the power off while moving and then restart it, but it got even wonkier because I couldn't change the ride mode.

2021 PAS with May 21 build date.
18K miles right now, issues experienced so far:
  • exhaust heat shield mount on header broken, header replaced with new model with reinforced mount under warranty
  • bike would false start (crank but not fire) intermittently on first attempt, always started on second attempt. Fixed with updated starter clutch under warranty
  • fuel pump began making noise at 8K miles, but did not fail. Replaced under warranty.
  • A couple weeks ago, front ARH is intermittently having an error, causing bike to not lower at stops sometimes. Will likely be early December before I have time to take it to dealer.

2022 PAS. Do I like it? Yes. Its a fun and capable motorcycle.
Do I trust it? No. I've experienced several problems and failures that I would NOT want to have when riding in an unsupported remote area (such as on a Backcountry Discovery Route or other such adventure).

I did 3000 miles last year on my '22 PAS in remote areas through the Rockies and into New Mexico, all solo riding. I ride solo remote areas all over south east New Mexico, I would take my bike on the BDR if I had the time!
