Just went for a stroll around the block 67.1 miles of backroads deer and Watching for "Topaz" ๐Ÿ‘€

Woke up feeling good for a change around 3:30am and decided to go to the local fuel station which starts serving breakfast at 4am, and to my surprise 2 klr650's was there from Ohio and was sitting at a table looking over a map ๐Ÿซจ yes a paper map ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I immediately plunged my ass down a few tables over and ordered 3 eggs and biscuits and homemade sausage gravy ๐Ÿ˜‹

I will admit I was hoping for one of them to look my way and within a few minutes 1 of them looked out and seen my Pan America sitting in the parking spot next to their bikes then turned and looked at me and nodded and I returned the nod , then before anyone could say or make a jester the waitress walked up to their table was was dropping off their food , her back was to me blocking my view of them and our bikes when she turned her head and looked at me over her shoulder and smiled at me ๐Ÿ™ƒ

She went back and picked up my food and approached my table with a grin and said morning Doc ๐ŸŒ„ and I said morning Katherine ๐ŸŒ„

She then said you see those 2 guys over there they wanted to know if you knew where route 551 merges with knifley store road , I giggled a little because that is exactly where we were sitting enjoying breakfast ๐Ÿ˜‰

She said Google has them confused and they got one of the local maps from the stand up front but are having trouble finding a nice route of backroads back towards lorreto and wanted to ride to the birthplace of "Lincoln"

And they were wondering if anyone knew that route and was wondering if perhaps you (i) did , she said I told them to ask you but they asked her to for them ๐Ÿค” then it hit me ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ
I was in my rags/cut ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ and i hated that I seemed uncomfortable for them to approach ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

So I said I got this with a smile ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I picked up my plate and drink and walked over to their table and asked mind if I sit with you fellas and plopped my ass down at their table and took a few bites of my breakfast ๐Ÿ˜‹

I probably looked like a Ole backwoods hillbilly because I don't have any teeth, hair a mess and haven't showered since Saturday morning ๐Ÿ˜‚

Then I said where you men trying to get to and the mood changed immediately and went to conversations of where they came from and a few places they were trying to find and mentioned that Google maps ran them in a circle twice and when they seen the lights on here on their second circle they decided to stop for gas and a bite to eat and hopes of a local to help possibly .

So I turned and looked at a small rack where ink pens and highlighters were sitting with other items for sale and went over and picked up a yellow one and sat back down with them and said, yeah Google will not get you there lol , they looked amazed when I tore open the package for the highlighter and asked for their map and I continued to eat while I highlighted a route from where we was sitting to the place they wanted to go , and a additional route to where they were heading afterwards with 2 fuel stops marked for them if they choose to go that way ๐Ÿ‘‰

I think I made a couple friends this morning ๐ŸŒ„ Katherine approached the table and asked if there's anything else she could get us and glanced down at the map and the opened highlighter and back at me with a smile ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I thought them 2 fellas half my age shit their pants not knowing how "small-town backwoods folks are for the most part ๐Ÿคฃ

I said thank you but I'm good which they also said and she walked away and silence filled the table for about 30 seconds before she returned and laid down our bills and I snatched them up quickly and said I'm buying this morning and I got this highlighter also .

She smiled and took my debit card and then relief filled the table ๐Ÿ˜Œ I said ya boys have a good day and stood up to approach the cash register and sign my receipt and noticed over my shoulder the 2 were leaving tips on the table trying to collect their things to catch up with me outside.

I was putting things in my saddle bags when they came out and thanked me a few times and asked if wanted to ride along with them for a while and I said it's no problem and you are welcome but I'M ON A MISSION FROM GOD and had a different path to follow this morning which made us all laugh a second or two ๐Ÿ™ƒ

We said our goodbyes and all left out down route 55 but I was WOT soon as I straightened out from turning out from the station and returned home with the misses breakfast and had the coffee pot brewing when I woke her up to eat before her ass goes to cutting grass ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚

Just felt like sharing this with y'all this morning ๐ŸŒ„ we are all comrades to a certain point ๐Ÿ‘‰ especially when someone needs help finding their way when lost ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Love this fourm and this amazing Pan America motorcycle ๐Ÿ

"we are all comrades to a certain point"

That is very true, especially amongst the H-D family. In 50 years of riding sport bikes and visiting numerous non H-D dealerships, I never felt more welcome than at H-D dealers. (Not all, but most.) Usually, there is a friendly hello upon arrival and a willingness to help you find the right part, accessory, clothing, service and of course, a new bike. If there are seats/tables outside I like to take a break and just watch. I have had employees just sit with me chatting about riding. Or, just a friendly, "Hi, where you headed"?

When my Pan America decided to take a small break on a remote country road it was a fellow with numerous H-D stickers on the tail gate that stopped to see if I needed assistance; even offered a ride to get help. Others had just passed with not even a wave.

Luckily, it was my fuel line that had popped out of the retainer coupling from when I coated the fuel tank. My mistake. I thought I had pushed it all the way in, nope.

In 2020, I was a Guy on a KLR 650 riding the Trans America trail at the height of Covid. Nowhere to eat, most hotels were closed, dodging cops because of "essential travel only" and watching for Topaz.... Sounds apocalyptic huh? 62 days on the road.. only 11 of them under an actual roof. I would have had a MUCH tougher time of it if not for strangers that knew the area(s) directing me places that Google, Waze and my purchased map didn't , and left me wondering where I was..

Absolutely ๐Ÿ’ฏ , it's awesome how most come together when it counts for sure ๐Ÿ˜Ž and damn I failed to mention "Topaz" to them fellas ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Hope they made it safely to their destination ๐Ÿ˜‚

I've always been a Honda guy but I'm seriously wanting a KLR 650 now ๐Ÿ˜ซ
From what I have read of your escapades, no. You would hate it. Too slow.

I am a KLR NERD. I fell in love with them when I was 14, finally got one when I was 30 and I will always have one. They are the toughest, most dependable, go anywhere, do anything bike ever. If the world ended or the Zombies came, I would load the KLR and leave the Harleys and Hondas behind.

(as I type this I am recalling KLR known issues that have persisted for many many years, timing chain tensioner "doohicky", temp issues "thermo-bob", oil use, and a large number of the Gen 3 EFI bikes are burning up fuel pumps.) I changed one for a buddy with a 2023 KLR this weekend. It looks a lot like the picture of Pan America fuel pumps. I still haven't actually seen my PA fuel pump.

But don't jump on the KLR forums and damn that bike. You'll be attacked and banned instantly..

The only thing a KLR won't do is go anywhere fast. Top speed is about 90 but I wouldn't ask it to do anything over 75 for more than 20 minutes.

But, the longest "dank nooner" I've ever yanked was on a KLR. Every bit of 250 feet before the front wheel touched down. But it was a slow nooner. You could have run along side and cheered me on.

I used to wheelie the hell out of my KLR!
It's like it was ment to be on 1 wheel!

I had a XR650L many many moons ago and it was flawless, I used it primarily as a back and forth to work thing solely do to the $10 - $12 a hour paycheck and it definitely served it's purpose, a guy at work back then in Cincinnati Ohio back a semi trailer over it ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ they paid me ofcourse to keep from claims filed I think $3500 ๐Ÿค” which was about what I paid for it I think but I never replaced it ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I think that's when I got a gixer that the guy who backed over it sold me for like $1500
