Hi all,

I have a small question. Can you also hear noise (ticking) from the valves or the VVT? Do I have to worry about that? I told my dealer and he said it came from the vvt and that it was normal. But somehow I'm unsure.

Many thanks and greetings

Stefan

Remember there is a lot going on inside your Rev Max
VVT (variable valve timing) is a bike computer program to adjust the timing of your spark in relation to crank shaft/valve position based on load/rpm
For many years I have built racing engines and engines for hot rods ect.
I have heard on a couple different occasions detonation(dieseling) at lower rpm's on my PAS.
Because of the 13:1 compression in the engine, you may hear some valve knocking depending on what fuel you have in your bike. The VVT does take care of most of the valve issues however....
I have discussed this with the service manager at my dealership and he told me to add some octane booster if it is a big problem.
Our fuel in my state is only 91 octane (premium)
I've only heard it a couple times so I haven't bothered with octane booster yet.
Always run the best fuel you can get in your bike. On these engines, that is not an area to go cheap on

Thx for your quick detailed response! Our fuel in my state is 95 octane. It's right, by my bike the noise appears at lower rpm's too. The first service is due in 800 km. I will speak with the technician.

Good Afternoon to you all,
I have a 2021 Pan with 35k. She’s had the tapping and idle shit off after riding 50 minutes or so. I’ll supply the video here…and at the end I did not touch the ignition shut off. Seeking advice right now, she’s back at my dealer….

Maybe bad gas. 13:1 compression so it could be detonation. I've heard mine slapping at lower rpm's on a rare occasion.

I didn't hear the video so I can only guess.

I am having difficulty uploading. So sorry. Shuts off on its own however and fresh gas at 93 octane.

In numerous occasions, I have thought that there is something going wrong with the top end and was going to ask the tech about it during the 1k service, but forgot. After the service, the ticking actually sounded louder. If this is normal for this engine, then I’ll definitely have to make the exhaust louder (or turn up my Bluetooth).

My dealer just let me know that it is a bad stator at this time....the whole top end noise just sounded mind boggling but the voltage was fluctuating so much that it was cause for testing concerns. Tech services has been called and a few parts are on order.

This motor is made to rev higher RPM at first it was tough for me to adapt to but keeping it around 3500 and above it is a great machine and engine. I think of it as a chain saw motor rev high cut more ……..🤣

I’m still trying to train myself to keep the engine around 4,500 in order to not be missing out on what this bike has to offer on the street. Every time I get back from riding it now, I always comment about how fast this bike is, and I’m not even coming close to the redline.

Interesting conversation in that I heard some of the same noises. However 1000 mile oil h
changed yesterday. I used 20W-50 full synthetic and those noises are no more. I wonder if the cheap synthetic blend they use at the initial factory fill up is just low quality oil ? If so this could be the source. I also noticed my shifting was no where near as clunky as it was prior to the oil change. Just food for thought using a high quality full synthetic 20W50 could be helpful for this plus running this motor where it’s designed to run.

I still have to remind myself that my PA is NOT a normal Harley engine and it doesn't like being under 3K RPMs. Even after a year I sometimes lug the engine. I'm pretty sure the engine has a compensator in it too which would account for the clatter we all hear at lower RPMs.

Hello, I have uploaded the video here. Maybe someone could compare the engine sound with his PanAm. I'm still not sure if everything is ok. The Harley technician said everything was normal. Unfortunately I have no comparison.
Thanks and best regards Stefan
