I recently ordered a Cardo Black from Cycle Gear…..got a really good deal. It just arroand just before I installed it I realized or wondered “how can I connect with my phone AND with the Pan America infotainment system (through the HD App) at the same time with one Bluetooth? I couldn’t think of a way and checked with the local Cycle Gear and they confirmed I couldn’t…..they thought only HD systems do that.

Next I checked the HD website and found their equivalent helmet audio but it says to connect with the “Boom” system on the bike you need yet another $300 part called a “WHIM” (wireless helmet interface module).

First does anyone know if this is true? Will purchasing the $350 HD helmet audio and the $300 “WHIM” actually work with the Pan America such that I can use the HD App (Map on infotainment system I guess…..haven’t used it yet) AND allow me to connect to my phone for music, calls, other GPS Apps, etc. at the same time? If yes - is it really worth it? What else will the HD App do for me? Just need to know whether to return the Cardo and go with HD?

OR……is the HD App kinda ho-hum and I’d be better off sticking with the Cardo and phone Apps?

Thanks - appreciate the advice!

You should be able to connect your phone and the headset to the bike to be able to use the hand controls on the handlebars. I have been able to do both Cardo and Sena systems, and I don't use the HD App at all. Bike has options to pair phone and headset, how well it works seems to be all over the place with posts I have seen. Only issues I have had is on the Cardo I tend to lose connection momentarily when I turn my head to the left, which seems to be a common issue. For whatever reason I have not had that issue using the Sena system on my other helmet.

I bought a $20 snow skiing helmet Bluetooth. It fits motorcycle helmets too. It worked well for a while. Plays music and answers phone calls. The handlebar controls work fine. Lots of generic helmet headphones on Amazon will work.

air pods and my Samsung earbuds link fine as well. Way better than the other expensive HD gear.

Do you have your AirPods paired to the bike or to your IPhone only?

I roll a Germin Zumo XT mounted above the TFT display unit on a Touratech mount.
My phone is connected to the GPS.
The GPS is connected to my SENA20s helmet comm system.
I can answer phone calls by pressing the button on the SENA.
I can change my music selections, etc via the touch screen on the Garmin XT.
My HD system remains completely separate from those systems. Does this take full advantage of the HD system? Probably not. I like it as I really enjoy the extra features and on-road alerts of the Garmin XT. Off road navigation is perfect...............
My system is not for everyone, but it works really well for me and is similar in function to the set up on my Multistrada. Just makes switching between bikes more consistent and similar.

Does anyone have any direct experience with the HD 50S or 50C headsets? Are they waterproof? How are the speakers?
I have the Sena 30k in both of my helmets, one for a RG that has the boom system and uses the WHIM. Pan America cannot/does not use the WHIM. No hard connection between phone or gps with the electronic display. HOWEVER, I do connect with my sena and phone and the controls are via the right handset and touchscreen controls. The Pan America IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO HOW COOL the baggers are with the BOOM system, but you don't NEED HD audio or etc. controls for the Pan America. Period. (I did get my dealer to agree to take 100% my Pan America back top value IF HD releases a 2024 PAS with a BOOM entertainment system (and ditch the HD GPS APP). I doubt that will happen but I HEAR YOUR PAIN cuz figuring out the syncing and audio with the PAS took up MANY HOURS as I was taking delivery and since then. THANKS TO THIS FORUM AND YOU RIDERS, I've learned much...and have chilled out. (A little bit).

Hmmmm. Never thought about that. I've worn mine in the pouring rain and splashes and misty days and etc. and not one "short" or static or breakup. So I suppose that means the connection doesn't get wet. The dials and etc. seem to be pretty well engineered...so probably water resistant I suppose but I bet if we put it underwater it might not work...

All - I purchased the HD 50S and it syncs with my phone and the Pan America flawlessly and works just fine with just my phone when I’m in the Himalayan. I’m quite happy. The only issue I’ve noted is that the speaker cover’s actually have magnetic rings (I guess to hold them on…..why not just stretch fit I dunno) but I have to be careful putting my helmet on or off because the cover tends to come off.
