Should HD offer an upgrade to the Infotainment system?

Should we start a full on campaign to get HD to do something about the navigation?

I LOVE my bike but the navigation is horrid!

I’ve tried and sometimes it works ok but most of the time I end up using Scenic or my Gaia App. This system is just not good for adventure bikes. This bike would be the ultimate if they’d give the option of a Garmin based display or just go with Carplay/Google equivalent?

I’d pay extra if I could replace the current system with one that just has CarPlay and I could just use my phone and GPS apps.

Why they try to come up with their own when there are other systems that have perfected mapping I’ll never know. Top manufacturers try but just are outside their swim lane.

Anyone?

Harley has a Zumo 590 kit on their website and of course not compatible with the PA Special 😒

I have the Zumo 595 LM and it’s powered off the USB-C outlet. I prefer using the Garmin GPS unit since I can move it between different bikes and my 4-wheeled rigs. It has dozens of saved routes I’ve ridden over the years, Plus it doesn’t rely on a cell signal or the reduced accuracy of the phone GPS. Personal preference.

Hey drifter, yep understood! Referring to the original thread, HD could combine their TFT Display and gauges into a Zumo combo as a replacement for the factory display and HD App/GPS which just doesn’t live up to the adventure theme. You’re very correct, GPS via Garmin or other option is the way to go. I also have my external powered via the USB-C, just want them to do better than what they offered as factory built in system! Thank you for the reply!

Agreed. I’ve yet to have a bike with a good factory nav system. One might exist, just not on the bikes I’ve had. They all seem to have their proprietary quirks. The PA nav system is notably bad since it’s not built-in with GPS and maps. Epic fail by HD for an adventure bike. Inexcusable. I knew that going into the purchase, but I’m sure there are many who were unaware of this when buying.

BMW uses the same type of app for their bikes with TFT displays. There has to be a reason why they don't just put Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in the system since they rely on cell phones. Perhaps it's simply money.

Saw this thread and I think you all will be disappointed that there will never be an update to Android Auto or CarPlay for the bike. In order to do so, there is a requirement for a separate display for speed, fault icons and odometer. Apple and Google will not allow that data to go through their software for obvious legal reasons. Look at the Africa Twin and see the ugly little LCD display they have tacked on to the main unit to display this data.

Or, you just section the display so the required items are in a border at the top or bottom of the display like my Jeep does, no biggie. An alternate theory I've heard is Apple requires Siri functionality at all times, which is difficult if you rely on headsets as the only mic/speakers.

Interesting, thank you for the info!

I’ve looked around and even thought about the portable displays that are just for CarPlay or Android auto but, that’s just another mount, another thing to power up, another connection etc. I have settled on my phone and GPS app for backcountry and Harley TFT Navigation for getting there and back. Seems to be working out and putting on some good miles!

Taking 3 weeks and going on an adventure trip up through Canada and around the Great Lakes so, we’ll see how it goes! LOL

So, it seems Honda is able to get Carplay on the Africa Twin without built in speakers/mic. It looks like you can only use Carplay when you've got a headset active, which seems like a reasonable compromise. Time to start badgering Harley.

I agree that it’s a bit stupid to rely on the grid with a bike that’s meant for off grid riding. It’s a great adv bike but Harley definitely came up short on a few things. I run a Zumo XT in a Touratech powered locking mount. I also added the Harley accessory lights. I tapped into the harness for the aux lights to power the GPS. It’s powered when the bike is on and there is no danger of running the battery down by leaving the leaving the GPS in the mount for extended periods with the bike not running.

Hey folks ,
I quit to do anything with the HD Display and I use the tomtom powered by the bike.
Even the communication thing with Sena. I don't give up a lot of time for getting it running, more or less.
At this mather is the software from HD not flexible enough for others equipment.
So I stay with single solutions.
Good luck with connecting the bike.

I'm still trying to find or make a solution. The HD info hub on the PAS definitely pairs with my android via bluetooth. I can sync the Sena 30k (HD) headset too. But the interface is not satisfactory. But I want the convenience of Google Maps (or rever or onx or garmin maps) plus full screen control of my spotify and other apps powered by/through Android Auto - BASICALLY the set up on the RG screen replicates my phone activity so I can keep the phone tucked safely away (but yes, it is hard wired via usb). I bought and tested a CHINA made device that I got powered up and it could work but then you don't use the PAS communications at all and ultimately I could NOT get my Sena to pair with the CHINA device. So I couldn't get the headphone speakers to work. Garmin doesn't allow android auto as an app. I can't use my phone as the display...it's too delicate. I'm looking for another device solution that basically parrots my phone ala andoid auto. Bummed about all this. I did get my dealer to promise that if the 2023 or 2024 models came out with a solution for this particular problem (as I see it) he would give me dollar for dollar trade in on my bike all in for a new one. We'll see how well that holds up but in the meantime, I'm searching for a solution.

PERHAPS AN ANDROID AUTO SOLUTION WITHOUT BUYING A NEW PHONE OR PHONE LINE? I JUST WENT DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE and I think a Samsung Tablet A7 lite (under $250 all in with 2 year insurance) WITHOUT a phone line attached can work perfectly. Lots of DIY'ers using them in their off road vehicles. They sell super secure covers and the ram mount can be used on bikes, obviously. I can strip all apps from it and ONLY run Android Auto connecting to my phone....basically allowing this tablet to mirror my phone operations. Thus, touch screen with all music and apps including rever or the harley app OR google maps. I'm going to try it out and see whether it can be a workable solution for the PAS. This allows me to keep my phone in my pocket safer than mounting, etc. Thanks to all on this forum for your insights here....

Very interested in how this works out for you
I'll post results here. The tablet should be here today. I've got a samsung phone so the manual seems to indicate I can make the tablet a simple slave/relay device. IF that's true, then the PAS connection to my phone should be undisturbed. Once I confirm it works I can start comparing the tourtech and madstad products for the mount.
