I recently bought a light kit from the HD website and I installed them the other day. You must take the gas tank and the airbox lid off to install the kit so I bought two new pairs of spark plugs and replaced the old four and cleaned and re-oiled my K&N air filter since everything was apart. Everything went well and the light kit is very nice and is exactly what I wanted. I started the bike right after I finished and it started as usual and I let it warm up. After a few minutes I noticed that the check engine light never went out and that the bike would not rev over 4000 RPM's. Anyone have any thoughts on this before I take it to the Harley shop? I twisted the grip all the way to the stop and the bike stayed running at exactly 4000 RPM's. I turned it off and on a couple of times but the situation did not clear.
I would double check and make sure you plugged everything back in. Clear codes and check condition again. It wont rev passed 4k in neutral but I believe if you pull the clutch lever in and rev, it will go passed 4K
I feel like a dolt, but everyone should know this. The Pan America has an RPM limiter in neutral. I went out this morning warmed it up pulled the clutch in and it revved to 9500, ready to ride.
Engine protection. No real reason to need to rev an engine that high in neutral with no load. If your in neutral you must not be going anywhere. All modern vehicles have this
As a matter of fact, my 2022 BMW R1250 RT has no such convention and can be revved to redline in neutral. Some engineer at HD evidently thought this was necessary.
I don't think I'm buying that one. You can stand beside the bike in neutral and rev it against the limiter at 4000 RPM and then pull the clutch in and rev it to 9500 RPM. There is a reason they did it, why? Who knows.
Did not notice any difference at all. I wanted to be able to clean the filter and reinstall versus buying a new paper filter each change then throwing it away.
