I recently installed the Motoz Tractionator GPS tires on my 2023 PanAm to achieve better off road performance. They work great on raod. At the factory 36/42 psi pressure the bike felt too loose on gravel roads with lots of loose rock and gravel. So I lowered both tires by 4psi (to cold 32/38 psi). The bike is much smoother and the front tire tracks through loose gravel with much more stability. A dramatic improvement and the bike still tracks well on the road. But the TPMS occasionally flags my tire pressures, which is annoying but can be ignored. I wish I could reset it in the system menu.
Interestingly the tire sidewall lists the load rating (783lbs) at 35psi, but does not say that is the actual MAX pressure to run. So lower pressure than H-D specifies is OK with the tire manufacturer. The listed sidewall pressure is considered the minimum pressure to run at the defined max load. 783 lbs should not exceed the PanAm weight on the rear wheel (300lbs?) plus rider and luggage (175lbs?), unless you and your passenger are substantially endowed.
I am going to continue testing with even lower pressures for gravel and dirt, but in terrain that does not have medium and large embedded rock in the road (to reduce rim shots).
Does anyone one else have any specific experience or thoughts?
