Why does the range indication go -- when you show low fuel ? This is the most critical point when you need to know your range and you're low on fuel. Let's hope HD can rectify this with a software update.

Just remember gas in the tank helps keep the fuel pump cool and happy. Repeatedly running the tank very low and letting the pump run dry will kill your pump.
It goes to the -- right away? Mine typically shows around 60 miles left when the low fuel warning comes on and only goes to the -- when it drops below around 10-15 miles on the screen. I've ran it dry, with reserve fuel on me, to get an idea how far it would go once it switched to the -- and it was around 25 miles.
You're correct, mine does the same. I just think range should show down to empty. I just came back from a 2400 mile Baja trip and ran out of gas twice because I couldn't see the actual range when fuel is low. Fortunately I did have extra fuel I was carrying.
A logical explanation would be that any extrapolated range would be unreliable given the variables involved. Heck, between the fuel pump icon coming on...and the fuel gauge turning red...they're already overdoing it.
